The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The book “The Help” is an extraordinary tale of extraordinary women taking one huge leap of faith and hope. From the first page to the very last “The Help” has made a tremendous mark on the way things were thought about back in the day. This novel really hit the nail on the head of what the 60’s were really like and even though slavery was over the passive aggressive remarks towards African American people. For me it was a cannot put down type of book, it was one of those that you weren't simply told of the characters, they were described in the utter most descriptive way, making you feel as though you really were ‘old friends’ with these women.
“The Help” is a novel about young white woman named Skeeter who becomes interested in the way a colored woman works for a white woman. This is quite strange during these times, so Skeeter makes it secretive and interviews different maids, writing a novel about each one. Throughout there are different little stories of each character and their emotional struggle or different events that have happened in their lives. Skeeter becomes friends with the maids and starts to see the world she lives in differently. She notices that not only do these women cook, clean, live, and take care of the children the children start to become attached to “The Help” making it so the child thinks that the woman is their mom. The interviews become more dangerous when the civil rights movement starts to boil to a high heat, so it is prolonged but, with Skeeters anger boiling about civil rights it is continued. When the book is finished it is written anonymously causing quite a stir in the small town.
“The Help” is a non stop, detailed, beautiful novel guaranteed for tears, laughs, and inspiration, a must read.
