A warm tropical breeze, a full moon, and a sky illuminated by stars. The waves are gently breaking on shore. Stingrays effortlessly glide beneath the smooth water. Indigenous, colorful birds can be seen circling above. For only fifty dollars, you can experience this beauty firsthand; the night kayaking tour launching from Marriott’s Frenchman’s Cove in St. Thomas is an unparalleled experience.

The kayaks have transparent hulls surrounded by LED lights that enable the adventure-goer to see below the water. The route is not difficult to paddle and no prior experience in a kayak is needed to complete the tour. However, a couple of kayaks have glass hulls that have been scratched or clouded which makes it more difficult to see the aquatic creatures. If you have this problem, simply request a newer kayak and the tour guides will be eager to oblige.

The tour is really something special. Commonly, many different species can be spotted during the paddle. Personally, I saw turtles, stingrays, plenty of tropical fish, and sea urchins. It was incredible! The tour also passes by impressive land formations including peaceful lagoons and rocky cliffs. The two hours pass extremely fast.

The tour guides also greatly improve the experience. They are local and truly know the history of the island. It was very eye-opening. The guides are also able to point out sea creatures and know a lot of information about different species. Additionally, they tell terrible pirate jokes that lighten the mood and help put nervous feelings aside.

Personally, I was apprehensive about this experience. Let’s just say that kayaking had never been my calling. To make matters worse, I was going to have my little cousin in the kayak with me. I was certain we were going to tip. To my surprise, as soon as the tour started my fear was completely forgotten. The stunning sea life and humorous tour guides helped me to just enjoy the moment, which is why I would recommend this experience to anyone.

With its knowledgeable tour guides, abundance of sea life, easy level of activity, and beautiful island views against a stunning sunset, the night kayaking experience is truly one of the greatest attractions on the island of St. Thomas. By the end of the tour, I guarantee you will be feeling elated and relaxed with memories of beautiful scenery and unique animals permanently ingrained in your mind. It’s truly a one of a kind experience that you don’t want to miss.
