The Red Circle Inn is the oldest restaurant in the state of Wisconsin. I don’t know what you think of when you hear that, but if you are anything like me it was, oh no. I thought it would be dated in every aspect, however it was a very delightful surprise, and exceeded all of my expectations.

The first time I ate there, I was eleven years old. And I could not believe how good the food was. Especially the brussel sprouts, gross, I first thought. I was still a bit young, and the outside of the building was not the most inviting to a child. A big building nestled in the hillside. Somewhat ominous looking lights shining on the trees. However now, they have new landscaping and a repainted exterior. Being older now, it is not intimidating at all, and I believe that it would not be to kids either. I have consistently been back since there at least twice a year.

There have been a few times that I went with a large group and with our reservation we received a private room. This was very nice because we were able to have multiple conversations going on. It also blocked out the rest of the noise that you could hear each person, even if you were on opposite ends of the table.

The first time I visited my expectation of excellence coincided with reality. After ordering, I was delightfully surprised when my steak ($38) came out in less than 30 minutes and was cooked perfectly to medium. The sides were american classics of mashed potatoes, green beans, and brussel sprouts. The brussel sprouts, a personal favorite as aforementioned, were an add on $6 side and they were well worth the money. Lightly roasted and seasoned with sea salt and thyme, it was a pairing from heaven. All entrees do include plenty of fresh baked rolls and a choice of a salad or cup of soup to start with.

Now, as a pescatarian I can no longer enjoy the steak that first had me running back to eat there again. However, I now get to enjoy the delicate salmon ($33) that almost melts in your mouth with the tangy lemon white wine reduction. Sure, it is a lighter option but personally I just consider that an added bonus. Or the whitefish fillet which includes green beans, mashed potatoes and a salty caper sauce all for $28. Even further there is an option for me that does not include fish, the three cheese raviolis ($26). The homemade pasta stuffed with a rich creamy blend of three cheese makes my mouth water just thinking about it. It includes roasted butternut squash, roasted walnuts dried figs and fresh sage on the side.

Although there were some touches to modernize the ambiance it does not seem like quite enough. They do provide an Ipad with the menu and pictures of the dishes as well as a hard copy. It does seem clean and put together, however due to the old building it just has a little bit of a dark or damp feel.

Now to the atmosphere inside the restaurant. It is a semi upscale restaurant, due to that I would recommend wearing a casually nice outfit. I usually wear a casual sundress or dress pants and a blouse. Do not let that dissuade you from choosing The Red Circle Inn though, you would be welcomed in anything. The staff is very welcoming and makes you feel at ease. Their only goal for the night is to make sure that you enjoy your experience. I was a bit concerned to go this past spring as I was in a walking boot and was not feeling well. Due to that I did not have much energy to get ready. Simply wearing a nice sweater and pants as well as having slight trouble moving around. I was greeted with smiles from the hosts. Followed quickly by a waitress asking if I would prefer a table closer to the door so I would not have to weave through the other tables to my own.

Overall, I recommend eating at this restaurant. Make sure you really take your time deciding on which dish to order. I am always happy with what I get but am left with the desire to try some of everyone at the table’s plate.
