Where I'm From
I am from the swingsets,
From Cheerios and buttered ABC’s
I am from the playset, where I stayed all day.
(Quiet, colored pink,
It felt like pure bliss.)
I am from the sunflowers
the hibiscus
That we planted in our garden
On any given day.
I’m from the homemade Christmas gifts and playfulness
From Meme and Pops and Nan.
I’m from the family board games
and fashion shows,
From, “Hey beautiful” and “Stop the attitude!”
I’m from Christmas wreaths
and 4 o’clock mass on December 24th.
I’m from the home of red beans and rice,
Crawfish and Jambalaya.
From the homemade deviled eggs
That everyone fought over.
The screaming of what there was to eat from Meme.
Hung on the wall were our school pictures,
Pre-k through now for everyone to see.
I am from the close family bond that will always live on.
Where, “Hey Pops” are words we hear every day.
