summer
When peacetime comes to the horses,
Light the night lamp
And leave the plastic Jack-O’-Lantern
On the coffee table
With the buttons sorted by color.
The light fractured
And I made a wish
That it wasn’t sticky hot out
And we could be on the dark bus
With real people.
The overhead light was on
Tiny legs stuck to leather seats
Looking up at the TV
Before driving to the Bat Mitzvah
Leaning our backs against the trunk.
