Salty Colors
Just close my lids and listen to
the world drowning in
sweet ocean tears carried to
the yard.
faint smell of smoke hanging
stale in the humid stir
that curls around my
naked toes.
tuck away distractions, crashing
conversations, crawling thoughts
into my dusty attic.
breathing in the heavy
silence that washes over
my shallow lungs.
colors, smells,
amplified beyond
realistic capacity by
the sticky air.
tasting the angry olive green of
thrashing ocean waves,
lavander calm of the pattering on
wavery shingles.
my hands are straining to reach across
dry pine forests and endless
waving golden fields
of lands we call home.
striving to touch the stubbly face and
strong arms that can overpower the
monsters banging on the cage
keeping my strewn mind.
yet I've found my peace,
I've smelled the love that
swells around my eager heart.
and I'm happy.

This piece is inspired by synesthesia, a neurological phenominon that stimulates one sensory or cognitive pathway involuntary to another experience in a second sensory or cognitive pathway, so like associating a color with a sound, for example. This phenominon interested me greatly, and I thought it would be a cool to incorporate into imagery for a new type of description. Enjoy!
