I Have Never
I have never gotten lost in the crowd
because no one was there to find me.
My back has never been bare of clothing.
My feet have always had shoes and socks
to protect me from the frigid ground.
My body has not withered in the dark
on a stiff park bench in the dead of winter
for lack of a cozy home to sleep.
My mouth has never been at a loss
for lavish food and desirable sweets.
My eyes have never been tired
from sleepless nights wandering lonely streets.
But this life that I live can compare to those who have,
because I suffer from a poor mind
that thinks only poor thoughts,
for I am not happy in the place I’m in
but neither is the poor man.
