The Pledge
Screw you.
Why should we all
have to believe
the same things
you believe in?
Screw you
for assuming
the only reason
I don’t stand
is because of the word “God.”
That word is so menial to me
and my reasons are so much more.
Screw you
for being such a close minded bigot
that you can’t comprehend
that people don’t believe in
pledging their allegiance
to a flag- an object,
a government that lies and harms,
or to pathetic politicians.
Screw you
for trying to tell me
who I am or what I believe.
Screw you for harassing me everyday
because I don’t say the pledge.
Do I harass you every time you say the pledge?
No, I don’t.
You want to know why?
Because I understand and respect
the fact that not everyone
sees things the way I do.
Screw you
for telling me I’m the disrespectful one.
All I do is sit here silently.
I’m not making a commotion
or causing a scene.
I’m not interrupting
what you hold in such high esteem.
So what exactly
am I doing
that is so disrespectful?
You.
You are the one
causing a commotion.
You are the one making a scene.
You are the disrespectful one.
Why can’t you go about your business
without interrogating mine?
You.
All you do is repeat
information that other people have told you
because really, who needs research or
actual facts anyway?
You say it’s about freedom,
but clearly not the
freedom to decide
what a person’s allegiance
will or will not
be pledged to.
