Thinking back on a Dog's Life
I remember when you met a firefly
for the first time.
The glow convinced you
to trust and follow it,
not knowing it will dart
right out of your grasp.
I remember you chasing
the dirty water that sprayed
out of our hose with a need
as if you were dying of dehydration.
I remember you sitting
like a posh British woman
right beside my feet, both of us hiding
from the sun under the shade
of a quaint tree.
I remember you laying on my chest
late at night,
our hearts beating in sync
as you drift away
into dreamland.
I remember playing the drums
on your belly.
Thump Bum Bump!
Your belly gets so round and warm
after you finish your dinner
and even after you steal my dinner
and gobble it down
before I even know.
I remember chasing you
in our backyard.
Running in figure-eights
as you taunted me.
You pretended to stop and wait
until I got close, just to sprint
right out of my reach.
