do you believe in soulmates
this poem is
quite frankly
embarrassing to write
do you believe in soulmates
part I
i don’t.
if i visualized it
i think soulmates would look like
two spheres of rose fire
burning in two chests
the fire is lukewarm
almost ephemeral
able to be blown out
with one soft breath
when the two are
together
the fire comes alive
and casts its aura
on anything and everything
the world almost seems
rose-tinted
the problem is
fire is dangerous
it soon shatters its own boundaries
devouring anything and everything
including those who originally held the flame
that’s why i don’t believe in soulmates.
part II
i do.
maybe i like the idea
that someone is destined to love me
having never experienced it outside of family
while some of those around me
can hardly stand life without a love
of course
i’m only fifteen
i’m not looking for love
but it hurts a bit
all the same
is it my personality
my face
my skin
i don’t think so
it may be the wrong place
the wrong time
high school
pandemic
but someday
i want someone to look at me
and feel the fiery rose sphere
spark to life
that’s why i believe in soulmates.
