I am from an accident
A “happy” accident that wasn’t a mistake
From a strong woman with a few regrets
Me never being one of them
I am not from a lifelong drywalled big stoned home
But from a woman who has love radiating in her bones
She kissed me to bed, read me children's books
Not long before she was a child herself
Making sure that there was food on the table
Risking her sleep
To make my life better, she wore her wallet quite bleak
I am from unconditional love, support, and hugs
Reassurance every time I was hard on myself
For not getting an A
Or even above
From solely a woman
A dad and mom both together in one body
That made me bigger
Greater
Smarter
Made sure that I was gonna be somebody
Someday
My mom gave up on her dreams to raise me
To make me who I am today
And for years to come
I can’t say what I would do in her shoes
Because at 17 years old you’re not quite sure what to do
About friends
About a job
About your plans for Friday night
But somehow in her adolescent brain she knew maybe
Just maybe I might be right
Looking in the mirror
I am not sure if I’d fight or flight
I am from a teen mom
And that doesn’t make her any less
My life hasn’t been perfect
But it could have been more of a mess
