Glitter
You said
here I would be perfect
but now
I feel nothing
except the glitter
under my skin.
Harsh, jagged edges
of perfection.
It never leaves.
I can't get it off,
Oh god, I can't get it off.
It flakes everywhere and now I cry
sparkling tears
a dragon's delight,
the flakes of gold I weep.
Oh god, I can't get it off
the glitter keeps coming back
and back and back and back
it never leaves.
and now I cry sparkling tears
a dragon's delight,
the flakes of gold I weep.
You said
we would be perfect here
but now
we don't even look at each other.
the broken shards of perfection
sharp enough to cut me
when I move
when I speak
when I look you in the eye
we both cry glitter now
too perfect
to be happy
Oh god, I can't get it off
the glitter keeps coming back
and back and back and back-
it never leaves.
and now I cry sparkling tears
a dragon's delight,
the flakes of gold I weep.
You said
everything would be perfect
but now
everything is different
with the exception
of the cat.
And even he
cries
this
damned
glitter.
Meowing in the night
because of the pain
of the shifting fragments
beneath his skin.
Everything is airbrushed now,
perfection without dotting the i.
you cry glitter
I cry glitter
We weep for the harshness of pefection.
I can't get it out
the glitter keeps coming back
I was told
this would be ectasy
but every time I turn around
the glitter
comes
back

This piece was inspired by making many, many messes with glitter and having a hard time cleaning it up. Once you spill glitter, there is no going back- you're stuck with it. This piece also comes a little from Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series, which first taught me that pefection isn't always perfection. So, the metaphor of glitter and perfection not being all it's cracked up to be.
