Autumn Song
Fall leaves,
Scarlet and gold and every color in between,
Paint a glorious picture
Swirling in the wind,
Against a sky like smoke,
Then drop like stones
Falling from on high
To crumble into dust
Flames in hearths left
To the last glowing embers
Slowly fade away
Leaving nothing but bitter, biting cold
Where burning fire made its last stand
Against the bleak and silent night
And gave in to the leaving light
To rest at last
In ashes
A chill takes to the air
Whipping faces heartlessly with winter winds
As the age of ice approaches
And the sunlight begins to die
Hours lost in days lost in minutes
And the clock ticks on
The harsh pulse of the universe
And yet, it is only a dream
The autumn presses on
And we find a tragic beauty
In the way the world dies slowly
To prepare to be reborn
After the cold, dark winter
Has passed, and left no trace
And the leaves are breathtaking
In the way they fill
The Fall sky with color, so vibrant
That the cold slips out of one’s fingers
For just a moment, to witness such a
Fiery display of orange and pink and red
And so the autumn passes
