Remembrance
Remembrance
A tender flame
was what my father was
a strong being with a soft soul
when I lay in bed
waiting to fall into sweet oblivion
I hear
his sand-papery voice
whispering prayers
into another
endless
night
I dream of him
his hearty laughter
is like my own personal symphony
and his smell
a beautiful concoction of lifesavers, cigarettes, cheap cologne
fills me to the brim
with warm light
Auntie says that the pain will go away
after the days go by
I politely nod
And thank Auntie for her kind words

My name is Lauren Kim and I'm a 16 year-old student living in New York City. This piece was inspired by a book I read recently. The main character is a girl whose father dies suddenly in a car crash. The book is primarily about her dealing with loss and grief. I'm not quite familiar with such feelings, so I wanted to explore and learn more about them through poetry.
