Comparing Famous to Reality
If you have never read to book The Great Gatsby a brief summary will help you understand. Nick Carraway, a young man moves to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. He rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, a wealthy but unfashionable area populated by the new rich, a group who have made their fortunes too recently to have established social connections and who are prone to garish displays of wealth. Nick’s next-door neighbor in West Egg is a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who lives in a gigantic Gothic mansion and throws extravagant parties every Saturday night. In the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay the main character resembles someone I know personally named Dale Rexrode they each have very similar characteristics. These characteristics include being a compulsive liar, outrageously “stuck up”, and vulnerable.
Starting out, Jay throws many parties as stated above to flaunt his money and show off his enormous in size home. Unlike Jay, Dale doesn’t throw large parties but has a huge house and continuously has to have the newest most extravagant things. They are both very “stuck up” or in other words very arrogant.
Secondly, going into detail Jay was always known to lie to everyone. Jay’s most famous lie is he attended Oxford University to carry on the family tradition. While everyone lies now and again, these two men are compulsive liars have an uncontrollable impulse to lie about nearly everything. Often it gets to the point where the liar is so accustomed to their deception, that it becomes second nature.
On top of being a compulsive liar these men are also vulnerable this also means that they are susceptible or emotional in attack. Not knowing a lot of Jays past he only states he was vulnerable in his younger years which would explain his reasoning for being more of a “flaunter” in his older years. Dale is susceptible when you ever want to prove him wrong. He gets extremely defensive until he realizes it’s time for him to be quite or he will get his feelings hurt even worse.
Wrapping it all up, Jay Gatsby and Dale Rexrode are very similar in many ways, and a few of the many were listed above. I believe these two men could be twins in some cases because of how many similarities they have with one another.
