The job

“Come to the kitchen!” My mother exclaimed. I was watching TV. and enjoying my papa john’s pizza when she called.
“What is it, Mom?” I said passing through the hallway with a half eaten pizza in my left hand. I entered the kitchen and felt as if I was at a funeral. I’ve never seen my Dad more serious. My mom was moving around the kitchen doing her best not to make eye contact with me.
” Sit down,” he said. Then he started talking and for some weird reason all of the things he was saying was going through one ear and out of the other. I started daydreaming and thinking about the clothes I would wear tomorrow and the friends that I want to hangout with, but it all stopped with one sentence.
“I am going to quit my job to start my own business.”
“Why would you do that?” I said still in shock.
“Because I want to be my own boss and work my own hours.”
“But that’s not fair,” I said when I was interrupted by the doorbell. My dad got up as if he was relieved to have left the conversation that we were having. He opened the door and let in our next door neighbors who had cookie cake and soda.
“I guess they’ve known about this longer than I have,” I thought out loud. My neighbors came in to the kitchen happy, so I showed them a fake smile and went upstairs, thinking that I was the only one not happy about all of this.
Everything has been going so well lately. School was going well and we were all happy. But now my Dad wants to put that all on the line for his own business? I don’t see how we will ever be happy again. Money will be tighter, and he will have to work more. Why would someone purposely do something that is likely to fail? Everyone is walking around so happy that my dads following his dream, but his dream is not my dream.
Looking back on this event 5 years later I have realized that sometimes in life you need to follow your dreams. My dad started the uniform business but failed 7 months after opening. This really effected money and our family. And at one point we almost had to sell our house. Although it failed I am proud of my dad for following his dream because if you never try you never know what will happen
