Sick in Cancun

“Are we almost there yet?” I groaned moving around in my seat. “Only a few more minutes.” My sister replied, leaning her head back onto her neck pillow. She looked tired so I stopped asking. I leaned my head against the window sighing because even a few more minutes felt like hours to me. It was worse because it was so cold on the plane. A freezing plane is not good for when you have a sore throat and a slight headache. We have been on this plane for a good 4 hours and it feels as if a day has passed by. Luckily, the staff handed out mini pretzels just as we were almost to our destination so that took my mind off of counting down the minutes.

As I'm about to finish my last pretzel, an announcement goes off saying that we are about to land and to make sure our seatbelts stay on. The plane slowly starts tilting down and eventually settling down. I start leaning back on my seat because the feeling of landing always feels like my stomach is getting twisted because I'm afraid of heights. A few minutes go by and we finally land. “We’re finally here” I breathed a sigh of relief. We get our suitcases out of the top shelf on the plane and exit the airplane.

While the plane lets everyone get out one by one, I look down at my phone but then realize my mom is way ahead of me so I began chasing after my family as they walked into the airport. This is the moment I've been waiting for ever since my parents announced we were going to Cancun. “C’mon our taxi is here!” My mom suddenly shouted. Everyone got into the taxi and we drove to where we were staying. It wasn't fun being with the taxi driver because he was arguing with someone on the phone. When he let us off, I admittedly got excited as I saw life-size human chess pieces in front of the entrance of where we were staying. It came as a shock to me because I've never seen a human-sized chess game in person.

Suddenly, my head started pounding and heating up but it didn't hurt as bad so I ignored it thinking it woul eventually go away. “Addison, let's go find our rooms” My sister said, looking at her phone with her luggage in her hand. I passed by my parents and followed my sister into our room.

Just as I walk into the room, a cold subtle breeze strikes my face. It smells fresh and the room was much prettier than expected. Pretty spacious too. Although the carpeting didn’t match very well, all the furniture was based off the color beige and had white sheer curtains. There were two rooms, one for me and my older sisters, and another for my parents.

It wasn't too dark outside so we decided to go swimming. Thankfully, my family wasn't too exhausted from the plane ride so they agreed. Me, my sisters, and my parents changed into their swimsuits and went outside to find the pool. There was an ice cream/smoothie bar inside the swimming pool so we all agreed to go there first. While everyone set their towels down, I went ahead and jumped into the pool. It was freezing cold and felt like the same temperature as the plane ride. Suddenly, my head started hurting even more. It felt like it was pounding sharp and heavily. Note: Do not jump into a pool when you don't feel good. The cold water made my head feel worse so I jumped out as soon as I could.

“Mom, Dad I don't feel good,” I said with my hand on my head trying to see if it was heating up. My parents walked me back into our room but I felt bad that they couldn't enjoy our vacation if they stayed here monitoring me so I told them to go back and hang out with my sisters. I took out my ipad to watch shows while I stayed here alone but even the brightness from my phone and my ipad made my headache worse so the best thing to do was to fall asleep.

“Addison? Hello? Wake up” I awoke when I heard mumbled blurry words but was still sleepy so I rubbed my eyes to see who was saying that. “Addison” My mom was tapping me to alert me she's there. I got up slightly and said, “what time is it?” “It's late. Are you okay?” My mom asked, worried. “Yeah Im-” I suddenly felt so dizzy that I was about to throw up so I tried my best to run to the bathroom as soon as possible and threw up. I felt so sick that I couldn't even get up from the bathroom back into bed so my dad carried me by his shoulders. Unfortunately, There was no hospital nearby so as a result, my parents decided to call uncle Phil because he's a doctor. They called him and luckily Uncle Phil gave my dad a list of things to get for the fastest recovery.

An hour before the sun went down, my dad went to get the medication my uncle told him to get. By now, everyone was back from the pool. They were worried that I wouldn't be able to enjoy my vacation but I wanted them to have fun so I said not to worry because it's not fair to them to have to miss all the exciting stuff outside.

The next morning, my dad handed me the medicine before him and my sisters went to the beach. I had a hard time swallowing the pills but eventually was able to. I started feeling better after I got almost 5 hours of sleep and when I awoke, I still didn’t have enough energy to go swimming or go walk around so instead I binge watched my favorite shows. Although I missed a few days of my vacation, my parents always found ways to cheer me up.

After another day passes by, My family is relieved that I’m not sick anymore. I'm finally able to go swim, enjoy cancun, and get unlimited ice cream. We still were there for 2 more days so I still had time to see the things I missed out on.
