How anxiety affects teenagers
When you're a kid, you worry about things like the monster in the closet, but as you get older, you start worrying about yourself. Teenagers nowadays are afraid of not being perfect in many situations, including school and in the eyes of others. Teenagers are also likely to develop insecurities about their appearance or body. This is common as teenagers go through puberty and their bodies drastically change. Anxiety, according to the dictionary, is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. There are 2 main types of anxiety that start during teenage years: social and generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. They are not always visible to others, particularly because teenagers are experts at hiding their emotions, but it is an important issue that must be addressed.
Anxiety may lead to substance abuse, self-harm, and depression, which are all extremely dangerous. For starters, teens often develop a habit of using marijuana and alcohol as a temporary solution to their anxiety. It may seem to work at the moment, as it has calming effects, but in the long run, it will only make makes things worse. In most cases, it causes even more problems because you are at high-risk for becoming addicted. As I mentioned before, anxiety can also lead to depression. According to mayoclinic.org, depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It has an effect on your mood and how you feel, and it may be completely draining: sometimes so draining that you can't do anything except sleep. Fortunately, there are medications and treatments available that can be prescribed to help deal with anxiety and depression.
Although anxiety is not curable, it can be managed and reduced over a period time. Sometimes it even disappears at the end of the treatment. According to childmind.org, the best treatment for kids with anxiety is CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). CBT teaches kids how to face their anxiety instead of avoiding it. Then they learn that their anxiety actually can decrease over time. Sometimes, there are cases when the treatment has to be combined with medication such as antidepressants for the patients who suffer from too much anxiety for the treatment alone.
Anxiety is a common human emotion, especially common in teenagers. While normal anxiety has a protective and beneficial function, it may also be a source of great pain for millions of teens. This is due in part to the fact that an anxious lifestyle can be so stressful or restrictive that it leads to depression. You must take caution while dealing with anxiety since it can lead to serious problems if not treated appropriately.
