Should Big Game Hunting be Legal
There was silence, and Cecil, the lion, was enjoying his time, but the lion’s peace ends as he heard the car engine rumble! rumble! but not a bit bothered by it a second later, he smelled the smell of fresh meat then headed toward it, he notices the fences as he leaves seconds later he sees another fence but still not bothered as he is distracted by the smell of fresh meat pow! Pow! Two shots are fired, and Cecil is dead. Once a famous, loved lion is now a dead lion. But he is not the only animal every year, Reports found that between 2005 and 2014, more than 1.26 million wildlife trophies were imported to the U.S. alone (Julie Cappiello)
an average of 126,000 animals are killed and imported into The U.S each year. Between 2008 and 2017, nearly 40,000 animal trophies from African elephants, just over 8,000 from leopards, and 14,000 from African lions were exported worldwide. The pros are that the lion population can revive itself, and other animals can too.
The white rhinos population grew from only 100 to 10,000 in South Africa alone, which leads to the cons of banning big game hunting
The way that they grew the white rhino population was by trophy hunting funds. Using the fund, landowners could make it more secure and safe for the white rhino. That's how the white rhino population grew.
"Nearly a century ago, an estimated 200,000 lions roamed across Africa," (Brian Clark Howard) reports. "Now there are less than 30,000, and they are considered highly vulnerable."
"When an adult male lion is killed, the destabilization of that lion's pride can lead to more lion deaths as outside males compete to take over the pride," (Flocken).
If we stop killing lions, we can save more generations of lions.
(Leader-Williams and his team) looked at white rhinoceros populations in South Africa before and after the country legalized hunting them. The white rhino population grew from under 100 to over 10,000.
Trophy hunting advocates present the industry as large, citing figures such as $200m in annual revenue. But in the context of national economies, the industry is tiny, contributing at best a fraction of a percent of GDP [gross domestic product]. Nature-based tourism does play a significant role in national development, but trophy hunting is insignificant. Across the investigated countries, trophy hunting revenue was only 1.8% of tourism revenue- (Infobase article primary source Report Finds Few Benefits from Big Game Hunting).
"Trophy hunting can create incentives for the conservation of lions, and the retention of land under wildlife-based land uses," they write, citing past studies. "Trophy hunting can also theoretically increase local tolerance of lions, and thus reduce persecution resulting from the threat that the species poses to livestock and human life."(vox should lion hunting ever be legal)
con is that banning big game hunting helps conserve the wildlife better here how first the government gets money from it so if it banned first the government will be financially unstable and will get most of the funds from the tourism for other reasons meaning that there will not be enough money to manage a national park eventually closing the park meaning that less tourism means that less money to the country
"Trophy hunting can also theoretically increase local tolerance of lions, and thus reduce persecution resulting from the threat that the species poses to livestock and human life."
Some national parks have tribes and locals, like Amboseli national park, where there are Massai tribes In the national park. So if they are in the national park, there are animals like lions, elephants, and lions like the live stocks humans have, so they will try to kill it, so this threatens livestock, but lions don't kill humans until necessary. Still, animals like elephants feel threatened when an animal is close by, so they will attack us, so the con of banning big game is that the locals and their livestock will be more intolerant to the animals.
(Leader-Williams and his team) looked at white rhinoceros populations in South Africa before and after the country legalized hunting them. They found that the white rhino population grew from under 100 to over 10,000.
This quote states that before big game hunting was legalized, there were only 100 white rhinos. Now there are 10,000 rhinos Hunting has made it profitable for landowners to introduce and protect white rhinos on their land; the market prodded people to actively participate in conservation.
In my opinion, I think that big game hunting should be banned because if noticed while reading a person from national geography explains that whens male lion is killed, it leads to more death because outside lion takes over the pride so, which leaves the death of many male cubs so many generations is lost, another reason is that if there fewer animals there will be less tourist because of that the amount of money you as a country get is decreased after all big game only makes 1.8% of what tourism makes.
In conclusion, I think big game hunting should be banned here. Why first because although it helped conserve the white rhino population at its worst, the lion population has not grown and is going down from 200,000 to 30,000 in a span of 1oo years. The record of lion hunting has stained the name of big game hunting. Second financial, it is true that big game hunting provides a lot of economic gains, but its revenue is only 1.8% of what tourism makes. Fewer animals means fewer tourists, and less tourism means less financial gain. So these facts make big game hunts seem like an immoral sport that the rich do. Hunting is not only bad for animals. It has its dangers. Roughly 100 people die nationwide in hunting accidents each year. So I think we should come together and ban big game hunting.
