Why I want to go to NYU
When I was in elementary school, my mom went to New York City. Of course, I was sad that she had left, but when she came back and showed me the pictures I just wished that she had taken me with her. So from that day on it became my dream to live in a city of dreams. I want to live there not because I believe the city will make my dreams come true, but because no one in New York is without dreams. Dreams will forever be my motivation to get up everyday and try as excruciatingly hard as I do in school and extracurriculars . So much of who I am is defined by knowing who I am and who I want to be. Goals and dreams have turned me into who I am and they are to blame for my accomplishments thus far. My ultimate goal and dream is to study creative writing at New York University [NYU], because the amazing creative writing program gives me opportunities to experience diversity and allows me to have a great chance at success as an author.
NYU has an outstanding creative writing program that has won several awards. They also have a great number of alumni who have gone on to become successful authors and journalists. NYU has well trained teachers who are professional writers and many are even published authors. Jeffrey Eugenides, the author of “The Virgin Suicides”, is arguably one of the most talented staff members. The reason I feel that I’m drawn to this program is the way it’s constantly evolving and open minded to change. It is nothing if not modern and experimental in some cases which I really enjoy. I love trying new styles of writing and getting my point or thoughts across with skills I’ve never used before. I want to be a seasoned writer with a ton of diverse skills in the area. Like being able to write poetry as well as news articles, or fiction as well as nonfiction. Diversity is also necessary for me to have an exceptionally effective college experience.
Diversity has always been something that I crave. I live in a town where diversity is rarely celebrated and many times it’s looked down upon. I go to a highschool where ableism is very prevalent; as a special education student it can be really hurtful. I really strive to find friends that have similar struggles to me, because in a small town where people who don’t match the status quo are excluded from the moments that make highschool enjoyable, can make me feel really alone sometimes. I want to learn about other cultures and be in a place where everyone looks different but is still treated the same. Being unsheltered from the rest of the world and having a true understanding of global life is something that I’ve wanted for so long but I feel like I don’t have access to other than Google. I feel that NYU is a great choice to truly experience diversity and I believe it would create a more successful learning environment.
The learning environment has also proven to be successful with the insane amount of published professional writers who are alumni of NYU, such as Brent Glass a historical author and travel journalist and Jessica Goldberg, who is a screenwriter for successful television. Well renowned authors also work in the creative writing program who would have great insight on the publication process and what it’s like to have your own book. Publishing a book is what I want to gain from NYU and I think this college is a great choice for this purpose. NYU has also been the leading national literature center for three decades and everything about this program just screams success for people with a passion for writing. This is exactly what I need to feel secure in my decision about a college.
NYU really just has everything I’m looking for in a college from a great writing program and successful teachers to diversity among students, staff, and learning material. That’s why going to this school is such a big goal of mine, and I can’t wait to live out the experiences of NYU. This program and city feels like a place where I would belong and find people that I feel at home with. While living in this town I’ve never really felt a sense of belonging so I think it would be incredibly relieving to feel accepted. The only way I can describe it is feeling at home when you’ve been gone for a long time. I want to belong to a place where everyone's dreams are as big as mine. My aspirations are what really keep me going during my daily life. This is why my life would have no meaning as well as no sense of direction without dreams.
