2021 Kindness Contest- Visiting My Friend
When I found out my friend was sick, so many terrible thoughts went through my head. All I could hope was that in the end she would be okay. On New Year’s Eve, after months of waiting til she was in the clear, I was finally able to visit. My mom warned me saying she might not look like herself. I had a wrench in my stomach but I was still very excited to see her. We hadn’t talked in a while but it was going to be nice to know she was doing better.
I almost feel that this shouldn’t be considered an act of kindness but I felt as though my visit may make my friend feel more safe and comfortable in the hospital. My mom had picked up some Chinese food and we had a picnic in the hospital. We then celebrated the new year with some sparkling seltzer and cupcake decorating and I remember hoping that she felt at home in such a dreary place.
I hoped by visiting her, she would feel closer to home even though her true home was over an hour away. I wanted my friend to know, even if she was going through a rough time that I would be there for her. Sometimes reassurance like this can be the most powerful act of kindness to receive.
